Sicily is three wine regions stacked on one island. The north-eastern flank of Mount Etna produces pre-phylloxera Nerello Mascalese and mineral Carricante on volcanic sand; Marsala on the west coast is the Madeira of Sicily, fortified wine reinvented by the Florio and Woodhouse families in the nineteenth century; the Belice Valley inland from Selinunte presses the Nocellara del Belice olive oil that is the DOP benchmark of the island. Each of the GIORIZZ wine tours is built around two estates from a rotation we work with directly — winemaker or estate manager reads the vineyard, estate chef cooks lunch paired with the neighbouring contrade, chauffeur removes the drive-home constraint so the tastings are unconstrained.
