Etna & Volcanic Terroir

Private Mount Etna tours with an INGV-linked volcanologist: summit hike, lava fields, northern-slope wine contrade, Bronte pistachio lunch.

Etna & Volcanic Terroir

Mount Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe — 3,300 metres, continuously erupting in one form or another since 1669 — and it dominates the eastern Sicilian landscape from every angle. GIORIZZ reads it two ways. The Ultimate Etna Summit day is a physical ascent with a volcanologist holding professional ties to INGV Catania — cable car, 4x4 transfer to the high craters, a close reading of the 1992 flank eruption that almost buried Zafferana and the 2021 events that reshaped the south-east crater. The Etna Wine Estates day is the cultural mirror — the same volcano read through the contrade on its northern flank, where the pre-phylloxera Nerello Mascalese vines grow on their own roots in the volcanic sand, and where two estate visits replace the summit altitude.
